A nice song to start out a workout. By the time the song punches down at 1:40, it breaks into a nice running cadence to kick the workout in gear. (At least at my ambling pace.)

Song of the Day: "Harajuku Girls" by Gwen Stefani

“Harajuku Girls” by Gwen Stefani

There are so many elements of this song that I love. First of all, the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis production is phenomenal. It’s the best thing they’ve done in years. It’s a great headphone song. There are cool little things happening all over the stereo soundscape. I love the way Stefani purrs the chorus. I also love that it's a lyrical shout-out from Stefani to the style and girls who are part of the Harajuku area/scene of Tokyo.

A 2006 song from a Portland band. It has a great 70’s British R&B feel.

Song of the Day: "Nth Degree" by Morningwood

I first heard of Morningwood and this song via their great album-cover concept video. Unfortunately, Mercury had to buy the rights to this song for their car ads and the intro was heard way too much on TV. But, the song is still a nicely-produced tight piece of pop/rock.

I love the groove in this song. Unfortunately, after listening to it two or three times in a row, it won’t leave your brain the rest of the day.

Westerberg’s strained & angst-filled vocals are perfect.

I used to hear a portion of this song as bumper music on the local “Almanac” political show on PBS. It took me years to figure out what it was. A great rockabilly lazy-swing song.

A great Mick Hucknall/Simply Red blue-eyed-soul song that uses the backing track of Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”.

Song of the Day: "Teen Titans Theme" by Puffy AmiYumi

I have a thing for J-pop and Puffy is one of my favorite groups in that genre. Though I have never seen an episode of the Teen Titans cartoon, this song is wonderful ear candy. The CD it was taken from was written and produced primarily by Jellyfish’s Andy Sturmer, which means most of the songs have great hooks. The adorable accents and great surf guitar are the reasons why this song shows up on many of my iPod playlists.
